Mar 04, 2019· Wow that is kind of a crap shoot in A36 which is a mystery mix. It can go from soft easy drilling to Hss bit eating monster in a 1/8 of cutting. I use coblt drills when working with A36. It has excellent welding properties and is suitable for grinding, punching, tapping, drilling and machining processes. The hot roll process means that the surface on this steel will be somewhat rough.ASTM Standard A36A36 steel is a very frequently used mild or hot rolled steel. It maintains a somewhat rough surface and can be machined and manipulated using a variety of processes. These include multiple types of welding, as well as grinding, drilling, punching, and riveting.
When youre drilling more than 7 x Drill Diameter in depth it can be helpful to do a small pilot hole to a depth of 2 x Drill Diameter. G Wizard will automatically offer this tip when appropriate. I was still surprised at how hard this piece seemed to be when drilling! I had the feeling if I pushed the bit too much it would have either dulled it out or snaped. Most of the time I use mild steel for projects from the box store or hardware but I bought this on Christmas Eve.

Nov 23, 2015· In my experience, drilling steel with a battery powered drill and plain jane drills is a real pain. I bet you could get it done, but it won't be pretty. Be careful to not snap off the 1/8" drill. And I'd step up from 1/8" to 1/4" to 3/8" to 1/2".
